No driveway? Cheaper local charging is planned
From spring 2027, government funding will help reduce prices at slower public chargers near people’s homes in Great Britain.
Funding starts spring 2027
What this means for you
If you park on the street, charging near home could cost less. There is no immediate price cut, so use today’s local prices when deciding whether an electric car would save you money.
What’s changed?
The government has announced £100 million over two years for lower-powered public chargers. These are chargers you use for several hours or overnight, rather than a quick motorway stop.
It estimates an average saving of around £150 a year for drivers who rely on them. Your saving will depend on where you charge and how much you drive.
A separate group will explore whether drivers could use their home electricity tariff at some public chargers. This is being explored; it is not available yet.
What you can do
Find a nearby charger and check its electricity price, parking fees and any subscription. Use our calculator to compare your charging costs with petrol or diesel.
