A plain-English introduction to popular electric-car makers, the model names you will see and direct links to their current UK range and offers.
Volkswagen launched the e-up! in 2013, followed by the e-Golf and later the dedicated ID. family.
Nissan helped take electric cars into the mainstream with the LEAF, launched in 2010 and built in Sunderland for many UK drivers.
The carbon-bodied i3 put BMW into modern mass-produced electric cars in 2013. Its electric range now stretches across several sizes.
Tesla began series production of the Roadster in 2008, then expanded electric driving and its rapid-charging network with higher-volume models.
Hyundai tested early electric cars in the 1990s and launched the multi-powertrain IONIQ in 2016 before its dedicated IONIQ range.
Kia revealed the Soul EV in 2014. Its newer EV-numbered family spans different sizes, from compact cars to larger SUVs.
Renault introduced several production electric models from 2011 and began mass-producing the Zoe in 2012.
BYD grew from batteries into vehicles and launched the F3DM plug-in hybrid in 2008. It now sells a broad electric range in the UK.
The Citigoe iV was Škoda's first series-production electric car in 2019, followed by larger models on the Volkswagen Group electric platform.
Vauxhall revealed its first all-electric Corsa in 2019 and has since added electric versions across much of its car and van range.
MG launched the ZS EV in the UK in 2019. Its electric range has since expanded, including the MG4 hatchback and newer MGS SUVs.

How to compare
Ask whether the car suits your real route, home-charging position, insurance budget and time available at rapid chargers.
Use official WLTP figures to compare, then allow for motorway speed, cold weather, hills and a sensible arrival buffer.
Check the maximum DC speed and, more importantly, how quickly the battery charges across a useful 10–80% window.
Compare warranty, battery cover, insurance, servicing, tyres, software support and likely resale value.
