Which electric car and charger grants are available in the UK?
Eligible new electric cars can attract a discount of up to £3,750 or £1,500 through the Electric Car Grant. Separate grants help some households and workplaces install chargers. There is no universal £500 charger payment for every EV owner.
Buying a new car
The Electric Car Grant applies only to approved vehicles and versions. The seller applies the discount; drivers do not submit a separate personal grant application. Check the current official eligible-car list and ask for the grant and any dealer discount to be shown clearly in the quotation.
Renting, or owning and living in a flat
The household chargepoint grant can cover 75% of eligible purchase and installation costs, capped at £500. You must meet the full requirements, including qualifying private off-street parking. Check eligibility and the application process before installation.
On-street parking and workplace routes
A separate route supports eligible households installing a cross-pavement solution. Eligible workplaces can receive up to £500 per socket for up to 40 sockets across sites. These are different schemes with their own conditions; the current chargepoint schemes run to 31 March 2027.
Before paying a deposit
Ask the installer or seller to show the exact scheme and explain what remains payable. Confirm permissions, eligible equipment and approval timing. Check any local or devolved-nation support separately. A quote that mentions a grant is not proof that you qualify.
