Does an electric car need an MOT?
Yes. For most private electric cars in England, Scotland and Wales, the first MOT is due by the third anniversary of registration, then every year. Being electric does not make a car exempt. Northern Ireland has different rules.
When is it due?
Use the official MOT record for your car’s expiry date. In Great Britain, you can usually have the test up to one month minus one day before expiry and keep the same renewal date. That rule does not apply when the last test was in Northern Ireland and the next is in Great Britain. Taxis and some other vehicle types have different requirements.
What about Northern Ireland?
Most private cars normally have their first test at four years old, then annually. Some cars have temporary exemptions that extend their MOT. Check your current record and the latest nidirect guidance instead of working out a date from the car’s age alone.
What is checked on an electric car?
Many checks are familiar from a petrol or diesel car. A fully electric car has no exhaust emissions test. The tester checks safety items including:
- Brakes, steering, suspension, wheels and tyres.
- Lights, horn, seat belts, mirrors, windscreen and wipers.
- The body and structure, and relevant electrical wiring and battery security.
Does a pass mean the battery is healthy?
An MOT does not measure how much charge the main battery can hold or how far the car will go. It is a check against the test’s safety standards, not a full inspection of everything in the car. A separate battery-health check may help if you are worried about range or buying a used EV. Ask what that check actually measures.
MOT, service or battery check?
They do different jobs. The MOT checks the items required by the test. A service is maintenance based on the manufacturer’s schedule. A battery-health check looks at battery condition using a separate test. Passing an MOT does not replace servicing or guarantee the car will stay roadworthy until next year.
What do advisories mean?
An advisory flags something to keep an eye on or put right, even though it did not cause a failure at that test. Ask a garage what needs attention and how soon. Old advisories do not tell you whether repairs have since been done. If the MOT has expired or the car has failed, check GOV.UK’s rules before driving it.
